CHAKA KHAN RETURNS TO THE UK
“ [Chaka] Khan is responsible for some of the most enduring moments in the past 25 years of popular music” - Daily Telegraph
“[Chaka Khan] Her voice could break your heart … and she is versatile enough to scat to jazz rhythms and swoon over soul… she is sublime” - The Guardian
One of the most iconic soul singers in the world, Chaka Khan, will return to the UK, to perform for 2 nights only in Birmingham and London. Showcasing songs from the Grammy award winning album ‘Funk This’ plus classic tracks from her 35-year repertoire.
IndigO2, London - 22nd July 2008
Khan releases in the UK the critically acclaimed album ‘Funk This’ on July 7th, and the single ‘Disrespectful’ featuring Mary J Blige on July 21st. ‘Funk This’ in some ways is a return to her musical roots with Rufus, a glorious collaboration with the super hit making team Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. It’s a tough ‘n’ earthy showcase for the gritty, in-your-face sound that first attracted Khan’s solid and loyal fan base. ‘Disrespectful’ earned a Grammy Award for the category ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo’ and for ‘Best R&B Album’; making her a 10 time Grammy Winner.
Khan came to notoriety as the singer for Rufus, and five years later as a break out solo artist. Known for her catalogue of classic hits: ‘Tell Me Something Good’, ‘Sweet Thing’, ‘Everlasting Love’, ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, and ‘I Feel For You’. Khan is a timeless artist, who is a renowned proponent of ‘Old school’ soul music. Her energy, dynamism and passion for live performance over three decades, has brought her special brand of vocal magic to audiences across the world.

2008 for me has continued with yet another fantastic concert a legend and a star. Her songs today are as fresh and as groovy as i can remember and after so many years it was a real privilege for me to be at the gig to experience it first hand. A world class backline of musicians including Andrew Gouche (Musical Director/Bassist) helped to create the funk and soul that is associated with her music, chaka had everybody dancing and enjoying the show.

- The legendary Chaka Khan is capture live in concert. Features 13 songs including ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, and ‘I Feel For You’.

Chaka Khan is a living legend. Her stature in the music world is legendary. Up there with The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and other Iconic names, the survivors of the pop world, who are still up at the top after 3 decades and more. How do they manage it?? Others come and go, disappear without a trace, I think it must be their passion for their craft that drives them on without any limits.
This concert does have it’s shaky moments (the embarrassingly long costume change) but Chaka emerges and we forgive her for she says “thank you for being so patient with me”, and you cant help but love her even more.
The band here are out of the league, terrific talent that only someone of Chaka’s background would be able to amass, and then there are the backing singers who are all paid homage to by The Goddess as she gives them their own spotlight section as we watch and listen in awe.
A lot of the Rufus material is included here, which is fabulous as we are taken back to the very beginning of her career with a backdrop collage of images being displayed.
My favourite has to be “You Got The Love” as everything seems to go perfectly here and everyone involved is just SO into it and having a fabulous happy time.
When the credits roll after a delicious 80 minutes plus (!) you are still wanting more, and in complete admiration of this wonderful woman who has persevered, and as we are reminded in the performance, has most definitely been “Through The Fire” and survived, glowing even more with life’s joys at the other end.
All hail to Chaka, and long may she continue to be such a bundle of dynamite and a joy to watch.
