The Gallery Bass Merchant, The Place for bass!!

Bass Player No Comments

A recent Visit to the Gallery Bass Merchant in London Camden, whilst waiting for the Victor Wooten concert later that evening, has led to me giving them another plug(mention), so if you missed the last post… here is another plug, Great shop lads…

I tried out many of their basses and amps and it has given me a good idea of which bass i like and what suits my style of play.. One of my favourite basses that i tried was a MTD 5 String made in the U.S.A (Micheal Tobias Design), Beautiful sound Beautiful styling..

—————————————————–

I was also very impressed by the Mark Bass Amps.. Nice and compact lightweight and very portable but yet they are regarded as a serious bit of kit. No messing here they have climbed the ladder and are now a major player, they are in amongst the big names mixing it with the very best of them.

PICTURED ABOVE: MARK BASS AMPLIFICATION.. and no its not Jonathon Ross that’s playing the bass, although you have to look twice…

BP_SMV.jpg

In January 2008, SMV entered the studio to record a CD and put together a summer/fall tour.

Look out for their European tour dates soon to be added.

Also look out for Victors new instructional Bass DVD a long with Anthony Wellington himself an accomplished bassplayer.

A new CD and  Book is also in the pipeline, exciting times ahead watch this space.

—————————————————————————

Back to the nights performances at the Jazz Cafe Blink and you’ve missed it. I hope you were able to make it, believe me it was something really special.

Again we booked our place at the front of the stage early and waited.. We had previously booked a meal in the restaurant upstairs but decided to skip the meal and keep our prime place at the front of the stage as we didn’t want to miss out on the view.

I have included 2 video clips at the top of the page from the performance.

Victor used 2 Fodera Basses, 1 tenor bass and one standard, both were 4 stringers..

His backline amplification was a David Eden WT800 Bass Head and a David Eden 4×10 Bass   Cab  with a David Eden 1×15 Bass Cab.

Anthony Wellington used a Fodera 5 string bass and his backline amplification was a Gallien Krueger Stack both Head and Cabs 4×10 and 1×15.

Pictured above Regie Wooten super fast Guitar licks a great soloist himself.. The Teacher!!

With superb solo’s performed by all of the band we were treated to a night a sheer music genius. This was worth the wait. Victor shared with us that he was taught by both of his elder brothers who gave him a bass guitar when he was just 2 years old. He called them the Teachers as they in turn taught him the basics and now years later he teaches us. What stood out for me was the fact that they all seemed to enjoy playing as a band together and they were all equally as talented as each other. It was a night i was glad that i didn’t miss even though our booked table in the restaurant was left empty ( no rice and peas and jerk chicken that night) but we were full on the delights of the nights performance the place was packed What a full day which started  out with a visit to the Gallery Bass Merchant earlier an amazing music shop in Camden, when you go in the shop it takes your breath away they have so many nice things. Again if your in Camden it is well worth the visit, their stock is amazing.

A good evening was had by all. I learned alot from the gig one thing is for definite Victor is Awesome.. At the end of the gig he and the band stayed behind and signed autographs and chatted to the fans..

We left the jazz cafe at around 2.30am satisfied Our day started out at 11am leaving Bristol and with the visit to the Gallery Bass Merchant which took nearly all day coupled with the gig you could say it was a long day, but well worth it.

Thanks for looking in!!

Remember to stop by my site again.

Please let me know if there are any gigs coming up..

THE SUPPORT BAND:

Supported on the night by the ELIZABETH SHEPHARD TRIO from Toronto Canada a very tasty jazz trio. http://www.elizabethshepherd.com/

eliz_3.jpg A Singer, Song writer, and Pianist She reminded me  a little bit of Sandra Bullock in looks, pretty..  the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio was formed with Scott Kemp on bass, Colin Kingsmore on drums and Elizabeth Shepherd on piano and vocals.

As far as being a “jazz performer”, Elizabeth does not count herself as one to be defined by a particular genre; her music comes straight from the soul, and is more than just what she does, but what she loves and who she is.

GRECO “Z” ZEMAITIS LESPAUL STYLE BASS GUITAR Sn. B027941‏

Hi Eugene,

Here is another bass for you.

Cheers, Craig

DESCRIPTION

Early ’90’s Greco Zemaitis style bass guitar.
Sculpted and stylized Les Paul shaped body.
Beautiful silver sparkle finish with very fine metal-flake pattern.
Three Thunderbird style Japanese made passive humbucking pickups.
Slim tapered bolt-on maple neck with top of the range Gotoh tuning pegs.
Zemaitis shape notched shield headstock with ebonized veneer front.
Solid heavy Gotoh chrome bridge for maximum sustain.

SUMMARY This bass oozes rock-star appeal. They are very rare in the UK
and Japanese guitar collector websites will tell you that these basses
were made in very limited quantities. I have never seen another! I
bought this guitar at Ed Romans guitar store in Las vegas in 2002.
Where I was told that it had originally belonged to Tom Hamilton of
Aerosmith. The bass still has a very long pink webbing strap with an
Aerosmith 1994 tour pass badge for the Boston Garden attached to it.
There is sadly no paperwork though. These basses were originally
built as a tribute to ex Faces and Bad Company bassist

Tetsu Yamauchi
The ‘Z’ bass as it became known has a wonderful full bass sound somewhere
between a Gibson EBO bass and a Thunderbird. This bass is in excellent
condition but does display some playing wear.
PRICING GUIDE:
Greco’s new Zemaitis line will set you back several thousand pounds but this
rare rock’n'roll axe is yours for just £ 500.00.

Beautifully profiled maple neck with rosewood board.
60’s style peg head with vintage tuners and strap button.

SUMMARY

A very playable and astonishingly loud Fender Japan ‘62
reissue of the Precision Bass. I cannot stress how rich
the tone is on this virtually unmarked instrument. This
is a real funk machine that has very well ballanced tones
right across the range. It is in excellent condition and
has bags of vintage Mojo! I loaned this bass to a
touring musician as a back-up bass and he used it
almost exclusively leaving his original ‘71 Jazz bass
in it’s case for the whole tour! I too have gigged
this bass and recorded with it and was very impressed
with the results.

These “Crafted in Japan” reissues are becomming highly
sought after by those in the know. A sound investment in
a future classic at just £ 450.00.

Review (Bass Player Magazine April, 2006)
Here’s a concept: a reissue of a reissue. Is that something like a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma? Whatever it is, it means it’s now easier to get your hands on the stylish, classic Danelectro Longhorn Bass.
 ——————————————–

——————————————–

Reissue Redux

A few years ago, Danelectro began to offer a reissue of its LongHorn Bass, originally manufactured between 1958 and 1969. That first reissue, which had a list price under $350, featured a crude saddle fashioned from a slab of rosewood and sported stacked volume and tone knobs for each pickup.

 ——————————————-

——————————————–
The company’s latest reissue shares many of the iconic bass’s key traits, like its unique hollow body design(pressed-wood top and bottom mounted to a plywood frame), sexy“lipstick tube” pickups, aluminum nut, and a deep, “scooped” tone. The new Longhorn features a bridge with individual string saddles and higher-quality tuners.
——————————————–

———————————————
The “Longhorn 3.0” possesses a slightly different electronics layout from the previous two versions, pairing a pickup-selector switch with master volume and tone knobs. I preferred the older layout—especially because the new one’s switch broke shortly after the bass arrived, making it impossible to solo the neck pickup. I was also disappointed to see the originals old-school tone dials and the reissues retro knobs replaced by bland, vibe-deprived plastic knobs. And as a matter of personal taste, I’m not a fan of the super-glossy black neck finish the company uses; I prefer the satin stain it used on its DC necks. The new all-metal tuners felt sturdier than their forerunners, but their low gear ratio made tuning a chore.
———————————————
——————————————–

Saddle Up

The Longhorn is a lot of fun to play, especially standing—the Dano is so light you could practically forget it’s strapped on. Seated, its soft, shallow contour caused it to sometimes slip off my lap. The instrument’s short scale made it much easier to pull off fret-spanning finger stretches, and with its stock short-scale D’Addario strings, the Dano felt taut and springy compared to many other short-scale basses I’ve played.

——————————————————————————

——————————————————————————

Some basses seem to ask for fusion licks, while others demand healthy servings of funk. Not the Longhorn—this instrument begs for root–5 action. (Luckily, my Eagles tribute-band rehearsal was there to give it up.) If you want a thick fundamental, this Dano can deliver.

——————————————————————————

——————————————————————————-

The Longhorn’s super-deep cutaways make it easy to fly high into the upper registers, though you’ll likely want to spend more time enjoying the mid-scooped thump it provides down low. Unfortunately, like many other switch-equipped Danelectros, the soloed pickups had about half the volume of the blended sound, making it hard to use the bass’s different tones on a gig.
No single style suits everyone, and the Longhorn is no exception:Its quirky looks kept me from taking it on a jazzy soul gig where it might have sounded great. But I loved its distinctive looks and deep voice. For rootsy root work, the Longhorn is a bass that refuses to be put out to pasture.
——————————————————————————–
GUIDE PRICE

These Babies have been discontinued and although made for one year between 2006-2007 were only shipped to the UK in very limited quantities. Mine came via an endorsement deal with JHS (Danelectro’s distributor in the UK) to use with Who’s Next the Who tribute band. I have 5 Danelectro basses from different eras and it has to be said that these basses with their hot-alnco picukps, sturdy tuning pegs and adjustable bridge are quite simply a pro version of the old classic. Loads of vintage appeal and in cracking condition.
Yours for just £ 299.00
