Lee Mack Ritenour, was born 11 January 1952, Los Angeles, CA, USA. Starting at the age of 16, Ritenour played his first session with The Mama’s and the Papa’s. Two years later he was backing Tony Bennett and Lena Horne .Know as “Captain Fingers,” Ritenour became a sought-after session player in the mid-70’s. Starting in 1976, at the age of 24, he began his own solo career which now includes over 30 albums and collaborations. Although heavily influenced in his early days by the relaxed styles of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Barney Kessel, he now has his own distinctive sound and fluid style. Along the way, Ritenour has received 17 Grammy nominations, earned several gold albums, numerous #1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious “Alumnus of the Year” award from USC. In 1981, he scored the pop15 hit “Is It You,” featuring vocalist Eric Tagg, which has also become a smooth jazz radio classic. He joined GRP Records in 1985 after recording for Electra the previous 7 years. At that time, he recorded the magnificent “Harlequin” album with GRP co-owner Dave Grusin. It was nominated for 4 Grammy”s and won 1 that year.
In the early 90’s, Ritenour teamed up with Bob James, Harvey Mason and bass player Nathan East under the name of Fourplay, who has released a number of soul/jazz/funk fusion albums for Warner Brothers Records. The first Fourplay album in 1991 spent an unprecedented 33 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart.
In 1993, Ritenour topped the Billboard jazz chart with his accomplished tribute to Wes Montgomery. In 1997, Ritenour was a founding partner of i.e. Music at Polygram Records. The first release on i.e. music was a “Twist of Jobim” paying tribute to the great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. In 2000, he and Dave Grusin returned to their classical roots with “Two Worlds,” which remained on Bilboard’s classical charts for 51 weeks. His latest release Smoke N’ Mirrors was Inspired by his very first trip to South Africa in 2005, where he performed five hugely successful concerts at festivals in Johannesburg and Capetown, with Smoke N’ Mirrors, Ritenour takes an expansive, polyrhythmic approach, working with musicians from South Africa, Cameroon-West Africa, Brazil, Columbia, Peru and India.
Keyboardist/singer/songwriter/arranger/musical director Patrice Rushen has had an outstanding career with several Top Ten R&B hits, including “Haven’t You Heard,” “Forget Me Nots,” “Feels So Real,” and “Watch Out.” “Forget Me Nots” was the basis of Will Smith’s “Men in Black” from the blockbuster movie of the same name on Big Willie Style.

“ [Chaka] Khan is responsible for some of the most enduring moments in the past 25 years of popular music” - Daily Telegraph
“[Chaka Khan] Her voice could break your heart … and she is versatile enough to scat to jazz rhythms and swoon over soul… she is sublime” - The Guardian
One of the most iconic soul singers in the world, Chaka Khan, will return to the UK, to perform for 2 nights only in Birmingham and London. Showcasing songs from the Grammy award winning album ‘Funk This’ plus classic tracks from her 35-year repertoire.
IndigO2, London - 22nd July 2008
Khan releases in the UK the critically acclaimed album ‘Funk This’ on July 7th, and the single ‘Disrespectful’ featuring Mary J Blige on July 21st. ‘Funk This’ in some ways is a return to her musical roots with Rufus, a glorious collaboration with the super hit making team Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. It’s a tough ‘n’ earthy showcase for the gritty, in-your-face sound that first attracted Khan’s solid and loyal fan base. ‘Disrespectful’ earned a Grammy Award for the category ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo’ and for ‘Best R&B Album’; making her a 10 time Grammy Winner.
Khan came to notoriety as the singer for Rufus, and five years later as a break out solo artist. Known for her catalogue of classic hits: ‘Tell Me Something Good’, ‘Sweet Thing’, ‘Everlasting Love’, ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, and ‘I Feel For You’. Khan is a timeless artist, who is a renowned proponent of ‘Old school’ soul music. Her energy, dynamism and passion for live performance over three decades, has brought her special brand of vocal magic to audiences across the world.

2008 for me has continued with yet another fantastic concert a legend and a star. Her songs today are as fresh and as groovy as i can remember and after so many years it was a real privilege for me to be at the gig to experience it first hand. A world class backline of musicians including Andrew Gouche (Musical Director/Bassist) helped to create the funk and soul that is associated with her music, chaka had everybody dancing and enjoying the show.

The legendary Chaka Khan is capture live in concert. Features 13 songs including ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, and ‘I Feel For You’.
Chaka Khan is a living legend. Her stature in the music world is legendary. Up there with The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and other Iconic names, the survivors of the pop world, who are still up at the top after 3 decades and more. How do they manage it?? Others come and go, disappear without a trace, I think it must be their passion for their craft that drives them on without any limits.
This concert does have it’s shaky moments (the embarrassingly long costume change) but Chaka emerges and we forgive her for she says “thank you for being so patient with me”, and you cant help but love her even more.
The band here are out of the league, terrific talent that only someone of Chaka’s background would be able to amass, and then there are the backing singers who are all paid homage to by The Goddess as she gives them their own spotlight section as we watch and listen in awe.
A lot of the Rufus material is included here, which is fabulous as we are taken back to the very beginning of her career with a backdrop collage of images being displayed.
My favourite has to be “You Got The Love” as everything seems to go perfectly here and everyone involved is just SO into it and having a fabulous happy time.
When the credits roll after a delicious 80 minutes plus (!) you are still wanting more, and in complete admiration of this wonderful woman who has persevered, and as we are reminded in the performance, has most definitely been “Through The Fire” and survived, glowing even more with life’s joys at the other end.
All hail to Chaka, and long may she continue to be such a bundle of dynamite and a joy to watch.

A recent Visit to the Gallery Bass Merchant in London Camden, whilst waiting for the Victor Wooten concert later that evening, has led to me giving them another plug(mention), so if you missed the last post… here is another plug, Great shop lads…
I tried out many of their basses and amps and it has given me a good idea of which bass i like and what suits my style of play.. One of my favourite basses that i tried was a MTD 5 String made in the U.S.A (Micheal Tobias Design), Beautiful sound Beautiful styling..
—————————————————–
I was also very impressed by the Mark Bass Amps.. Nice and compact lightweight and very portable but yet they are regarded as a serious bit of kit. No messing here they have climbed the ladder and are now a major player, they are in amongst the big names mixing it with the very best of them.
PICTURED ABOVE: MARK BASS AMPLIFICATION.. and no its not Jonathon Ross that’s playing the bass, although you have to look twice…

Back to the nights performances at the Jazz Cafe Blink and you’ve missed it. I hope you were able to make it, believe me it was something really special.
Again we booked our place at the front of the stage early and waited.. We had previously booked a meal in the restaurant upstairs but decided to skip the meal and keep our prime place at the front of the stage as we didn’t want to miss out on the view.
I have included 2 video clips at the top of the page from the performance.
Victor used 2 Fodera Basses, 1 tenor bass and one standard, both were 4 stringers..
His backline amplification was a David Eden WT800 Bass Head and a David Eden 4×10 Bass Cab with a David Eden 1×15 Bass Cab.
Anthony Wellington used a Fodera 5 string bass and his backline amplification was a Gallien Krueger Stack both Head and Cabs 4×10 and 1×15.
Pictured above Regie Wooten super fast Guitar licks a great soloist himself.. The Teacher!!
With superb solo’s performed by all of the band we were treated to a night a sheer music genius. This was worth the wait. Victor shared with us that he was taught by both of his elder brothers who gave him a bass guitar when he was just 2 years old. He called them the Teachers as they in turn taught him the basics and now years later he teaches us. What stood out for me was the fact that they all seemed to enjoy playing as a band together and they were all equally as talented as each other. It was a night i was glad that i didn’t miss even though our booked table in the restaurant was left empty ( no rice and peas and jerk chicken that night) but we were full on the delights of the nights performance the place was packed What a full day which started out with a visit to the Gallery Bass Merchant earlier an amazing music shop in Camden, when you go in the shop it takes your breath away they have so many nice things. Again if your in Camden it is well worth the visit, their stock is amazing.
A good evening was had by all. I learned alot from the gig one thing is for definite Victor is Awesome.. At the end of the gig he and the band stayed behind and signed autographs and chatted to the fans..
We left the jazz cafe at around 2.30am satisfied Our day started out at 11am leaving Bristol and with the visit to the Gallery Bass Merchant which took nearly all day coupled with the gig you could say it was a long day, but well worth it.
Thanks for looking in!!
Remember to stop by my site again.
Please let me know if there are any gigs coming up..

A Singer, Song writer, and Pianist She reminded me a little bit of Sandra Bullock in looks, pretty.. the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio was formed with Scott Kemp on bass, Colin Kingsmore on drums and Elizabeth Shepherd on piano and vocals.
As far as being a “jazz performer”, Elizabeth does not count herself as one to be defined by a particular genre; her music comes straight from the soul, and is more than just what she does, but what she loves and who she is.
